Looking beyond the declaration
The declaration is where your work ends, not where it starts. The real question sits underneath it: what are these goods, where do they come from, which rules apply and is the file we received actually complete?
In a single day you work on very different shipments. Different products, different legislation, different permits. That means switching constantly and judging per customer what is needed. Nothing is black and white.
Because you know why a piece of data is in a declaration, you also notice when something is missing. You catch it before the file leaves the office, which saves our customers delays at the border.
Meanwhile the legislation keeps moving. CBAM, EUDR and the new Union Customs Code change the rules. Here you dig into them yourself and share with the team what they mean for our customers.
What we expect from you
Customs is a profession you never finish learning. This is what the work asks of you.
You look beyond the declaration
You want to know what is in the box, where it comes from and which rules apply. Only then is a declaration more than filling in fields.
You understand why data is needed
Every field has a reason. Because you know that reason, you can explain to a customer why you are asking for something.
You spot what is off
You notice a missing document or permit up front, instead of during an inspection.
You think in the whole chain
Customs never stands apart from transport, warehousing and forwarding. You know what is needed at which moment.
You enjoy working with data
Commodity codes, values, origins, volumes. You work with data all day and like finding the pattern in it.
You dig into new legislation
CBAM, EUDR, the new UCC. You go into it and work out what it means in practice, even when there is no ready-made answer.
You advise and guide
Customers come to us with complex questions. You turn legislation into a procedure that works, internally and externally.
You share what you know
What you figure out becomes knowledge for the department. Sparring with colleagues is part of the day.

Our department is strong at building things together. When a file gets stuck, or new legislation arrives that nobody fully understands yet, we pick it up as a team. Sharing knowledge and sparring are not scheduled, they happen all day.
And it should be said: there is a lot of laughter. You work with colleagues who take their profession seriously and themselves a little less so.

Our offices
Van der Helm operates from three strategically located sites that perfectly align with our logistics services.
In Hoofddorp, near Schiphol Airport, we support customers with fast air freight connections and excellent accessibility for international shipments.
In Moerdijk, we are located in the heart of logistics between the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp, ideal for sea freight, warehousing, and multimodal solutions.
Our head office in Den Hoorn is the central point from which our teams collaborate on planning, customer service, and operations. Thanks to these locations, we can work flexibly, efficiently, and close to our customers—exactly where and when they need us.
